How the scam database works

One search checks three sources.

  1. RepChecked members

A member whose username or connected account matches, with their identity verification status, trust score and transaction record.

  2. The Scam Alert Registry

Reports filed against handles by verified members, with evidence. Alerts are published only after manual review.

  3. Contact checks

Email, phone and PayPal lookups against filed reports, for members with Verified Identity. A match never reveals the contact value.

Questions

Is the scam database free to search?
Yes. Anyone can search a username, handle or profile link for free, with no account required. Email, phone and PayPal lookups are available to members with Verified Identity.
Which platforms can I search?
You can search Reddit, Discord, eBay, Instagram, Facebook, Whatnot and Mercari by username or profile link. A plain username is checked on all of them at once, and a profile link checks the platform it belongs to. For any other site, paste the profile link, such as offerup.com/username.
Is filing an alert free?
Yes. Filing an alert costs nothing. You need a free account and a US mobile number we can text a code to. If you already have Verified Identity, you can file with that instead.
Why do I need an account and a phone number to file?
So every report traces back to one real person. A mobile number can only be linked to one account, so nobody can open several accounts to pile reports onto a handle, and a reporter caught submitting fabricated evidence cannot start over with a new account. That is what makes a published alert worth trusting. We keep only a protected fingerprint of your number, never the number itself, and it is never shown to anyone, including the person you report.
When does an alert become public?
Every alert needs a listing or conversation screenshot and proof of payment or shipment, and a person reviews it before anything is published. An alert from a member with Verified Identity is published once it passes review. An alert from a phone-verified member is published after review only once a second, independent member reports the same handle, or once the reporter completes an ID check. Until then it stays private. Pending and rejected alerts are never public.
What does it mean if a search finds nothing?
No RepChecked member and no published alert matched your search. An empty search is not a guarantee of safety, so use your own judgment and invite the other person to verify before you transact.
Can someone respond to a report about them?
Yes. The owner of a handle can prove control of it to post one response per alert or dispute a report once. Responses appear alongside published alerts, and corrections or removal requests go through our contact page.
